Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2023 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a statement of origin and intent— drawn from Napa’s most coveted volcanic mountain sites, including Atlas Peak and our estate Rockwell Ridge Vineyard, perched high within the Crystal Springs AVA. From these rugged, elevated slopes, only 238 cases were crafted, each bottle capturing the authority and finesse of a truly distinguished vintage.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 23 months in predominantly new French and Hungarian oak. The result is a Cabernet of commanding presence and remarkable polish: layered, structured, and effortlessly composed. Dark mountain fruit unfolds with depth and clarity, framed by finely grained tannins, subtle spice, and a lingering mineral imprint that speaks unmistakably of its volcanic origins.

This is a vintage defined by focus and restraint rather than excess. The growing season delivered exceptional balance, allowing the wine to express power without weight and elegance without compromise. Each sip builds gradually, finishing long, resonant, and quietly authoritative — equally compelling in its youth and unmistakably destined for graceful evolution over the next decade and beyond.

Produced in strictly limited quantity, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is not a wine made for the masses, but for those who recognize opportunity when it presents itself. It is the kind of release collectors speak of years later —remembered not only for its quality, but for the foresight required to secure it in time.

Wine Profile

Ratings

"The 2023 Hertelendy Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot. This wine is deep ruby and opaque; forward fruited, the heady bouquet reveals aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, boysenberry, mulberry, blueberries and dark raspberry. Additional layers are from barrel, complementary they are present but remain a comfortable complement. These include toasted cedar, dried sage, dark chocolate and tobacco. And as the wine evolves in the glass, it offers a light note of red chili spice and dark cocoa powder. Darker fruit influenced, this wine reveals plenty of depth and grip and we might add flavor. Rich, expressive and generous, the palate tastes like plum, dark cherry, boysenberry, blackberry and toasted oak with finishing notes of stone fruits as the wine evolves in the glass including apricot and white peach (the stone fruits were mentioned by Ralph; these are flavors we don’t always associate with a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon). Bright juicy and big. This wine has plenty of muscle with firmly gripping tanning broadly coating the palate with a dusty and drying character far outpacing the fruit on the finish." — Napa Wine Project, 97-99 points

"Bold and fresh, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a slightly restrained character compared to previous vintages. Complex aromas feature notes of black raspberries and a softly spicy essence that invites you back for more. With a silky-smooth texture on the palate, this wine is incredibly food-friendly. " — Anthony Mueller, 96+ Points

"The 2023 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Hertelendy in impressive right from the start. It reveals aromas that are layered and expressive, with ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit laced with notes of baking spice, violet petals, gravelly minerality, fresh sage, and a touch of well-integrated toasted oak. On the palate, the wine is deep and structured, offering impressive richness supported by lively acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. Concentrated flavors are framed by firm yet refined tannins, leading to a long, resonant finish. Powerful yet poised, this Cabernet shows remarkable balance today and has the structure to develop gracefully for many years to come." — International Wine Report, 96 Points

"Another world-class edition of this wine, the 2023 Hertelendy ‘Napa Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon was stored in a combination of manly new French and Hungarian Oak barrels prior to bottling. This is beautifully-expressive in its heady youth. Red and dark florals parade with Turkish coffee, cardamom dusted black fruits and dark chocolate shavings on the nose. The palate is silky and soft on the approach as this glides throughout the drinking experience. Voluptuous, sturdy and dense, enjoy this outstanding bottling now and over the next fifteen plus years to come. Drink 2026-2042." — Owen Bargreen, 96 Points

"Based on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Merlot and aged 23 months in French and Hungarian oak, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon offers pure cassis, crushed stone, sappy flowers, and graphite aromatics. It's medium to full-bodied and wonderfully balanced, with a lively, elegant mouthfeel, classy, polished, fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. This is another 2023 from this estate that shines for its sheer class and balance. Drink 2025-2045." — Jeb Dunnuck, 95 Points

"... Hertelendy's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon spent 23 months in 90% new oak— predominantly French, but with about 10% Hungarian oak (a tribute to the family's ancestry). Faint herbal shadings accent cherries and cassis on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is velvety and plush, easing into a long, mocha-tinged finish. At 238 cases produced, the volume is smaller than in previous vintages, but it remains one of the winery's largest-volume offerings."  — Robert Parker Wine Advocate, 94 Points

"Savory dark-fruit aromas of black currants, coffee beans, mulberries, ink and bitter chocolate. The palate is full-bodied with a textural mouthfeel and firmly framed tannins that lead into a plush, generous finish. Nicely constructed with plenty of flesh. Drink or hold." — James Suckling, 94 Points
