“The 2023 Hertelendy Legend is primarily made from free run juice. This wine is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec. This wine is deep ruby and opaque; color is never an issue with this bottling. The bouquet is a pretty union between ripe fruit and barrel influences. These scents include blackberry, Damson plum, Satsuma plum, boysenberry, blueberries and dark mulberry. Other notes include chocolate, mocha, cocoa powder and espresso. We love the tension here, especially the interplay between the tumbled tannins and the rich fruit. This wine tastes like blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry and dark mulberry. The lightly gritty tannins are slow to fully express themselves; they become more pronounced given time, especially on the finish. Lingers with toasted cedar and dried herbs including sage. Ralph told us this blend almost made itself; he knows what the individual varieties already taste like and in an exceptional vintage, in the cellar, he ‘stays out of the way’. "Hertelendy 2023 Legend (Napa Valley). When dealing with exceptional high-end Napa Bordeaux blends of the sort Hertelendy produces, it can seem arbitrary to distinguish between, say, the Audere blend and this Legend, which seems to be mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. Both are fine, magnificent wines, but I have to give the nod to the Legend, which is Hertelendy’s priciest 2023. It’s nuclear in Cabernet power, detonating with the ripest, purest blackberries imaginable. I doubt that any other Cabernet in the world is this dense, including Latour. The concentration is just fabulous. It literally takes you some time to grasp it, it’s that unsettling. The oak is equally rich, but it’s really the fruit that’s so dazzling. And so are the tannins, as soft and sweet and complex as you’ll find anywhere in Napa Valley. Behind the fruit is a tangy minerality suggestive of graphite that is like licking the volcanic rockbed of Napa’s mountains. This wine truly blows my mind. It’s so young right now, but the amazing thing is how precocious it is, even in its babyhood. I would drink it tonight, with the foods the winery itself suggests: Wagyu ribeye, filet mignon with truffle butter, beef bourguignon. With the bottle price, that would be an expensive meal, but a memorable one for a wedding or anniversary or something equally special. On the other hand, you can tuck this away in your cellar for ten years, twenty, thirty?
