The 2023 Signature Mountain Blend stands as one of Hertelendy’s most intimate and expressive estate statements — an unfiltered reflection of place, precision, and time. Anchored by our Rockwell Ridge Vineyard, planted in 1993 and perched high within the revered Crystal Springs AVA, the blend is subtly enhanced by select parcels from Atlas Peak, Coombsville, and the Silverado Bench.
Composed of 61% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot, the 2023 vintage unfolds with quiet confidence —layered, sculpted, and effortlessly poised. Mountain fruit brings depth and tension, resulting in a wine of seamless balance and silken authority.
Produced in strictly limited quantities (only 122 cases produced), the 2023 Signature Mountain Blend is a study in restraint and intention. Its complexity and graceful structure promises a long and compelling evolution in the cellar.
For collectors drawn to authenticity, scarcity, and the subtle language of great mountain terroir, this release will not linger — and will only grow more elusive with age.

"Hertelendy's 2023 Signature Mountain Blend is a terrific effort, a rockstar blend of 61% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. Floral notes and hints of mint accent beautiful black cherries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is simultaneously rich and velvety yet bright and refreshing on the lingering finish. It should drink well for close to 20 years." — Robert Parker Wine Advocate, 97 Points
"Hertelendy 2023 Signature Mountain Red Wine (Napa Valley). The winery describes this as a “Right Bank Bordeaux.” While I don’t know the precise cépage, the ’22 was mainly Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot, so we can assume this wine has a similar profile. A majority of the grapes were sourced from high up on Howell Mountain, which accounts for the concentration and density. The Merlot is the star, offering, not Sauvignon’s blackberries and currants, but an immense wealth of cherries, both black and red, with a broad range of associated notes: red licorice, kirsch liqueur, and even a streak of chocolate. This is the Hertelendy style: massively ripe, rich in soft, sophisticated tannins, balanced by nice acidity, and strongly oaked. Beyond the details, your lasting impression is of decadent deliciousness. It’s almost candied, but the finish is thoroughly dry. This lovely wine will age in the bottle, but it’s irresistibly drinkable now, and gets better and better as it breathes in the glass. The amazing thing is that, despite its stupendous richness, it will not overshadow a simple slab of grilled beef. That is true glamor: a wine that dazzles, but knows how to step aside to allow another star to shine." — Steven Heimoff, 97 Points
"... the 2023 Red Blend Signature Mountain Blend is cut from the same cloth, yet perhaps with a touch more richness and depth. Ripe blackcurrants, spicy wood, graphite, Asian spice, and tobacco all emerge from this quintessential 2023, which is medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, graceful mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. I absolutely love its balance, purity, and class. It should keep for 20-30 years if well stored." — Jeb Dunnuck, 97 Points
“The 2023 Hertelendy Signature Mountain Blend 61% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. The grapes for this wine are from Ralph’s Rockwell Ridge estate located on the higher reaches of Crystal Springs AVA. This wine was aged for 23 months in 90% new French and Hungarian oak barrels. The bouquet is distinctive, we hope we could pick this out of a blind tasting of other Napa Valley Merlot led bottlings. A union of both fruit and barrel, ripe, this wine smells of boysenberry jam, blackberry pie, dark plums, boysenberry and dark mulberry. And sweet baking spices including mocha, cocoa powder, milk chocolate and espresso. According to Ralph this bottling often enters its prime in the 7-10 year window; we would be comfortable holding this for 15-20 years. It is dark fruited across the palate with flavors of blackberry and Satsuma plum. Its flavors including blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry and dark mulberry. Rich, layered and intense, time this finish – you will not be disappointed. Both flavor and texture continue to persist in parallel for quite some time. The tannins are moderately gripping, lingering across the palate with a drying character.” — Napa Wine Project, 96-98 Points
“The 2023 Signature Mountain Blend showcases a Merlot-dominant profile with a firm backbone and a fresh, fleshy core of dark red and black fruit, delivering a full-bodied experience. Fresh and complex, it features fine-grained tannins and good acidity. As it sits on the palate, the wine reveals layers of complexity and evolves in intensity. Bold yet delicate, it expresses itself in the best possible ways, making for an engaging tasting experience.” — Anthony Mueller, 96+ Points
"The incredible 2023 Hertelendy ‘Signature Mountain Red Blend’ Red Wine is a sensational combination of Merlot and Cabernet Franc that was stored in nearly all new French oak before bottling. Alluring right away, this offers cedar and potpourri aromatics alongside wet gravel and shades of sweet pipe tobacco. The palate is harmonious and rich with refined tannins and great viscosity as this Right Bank-inspired blend is already drinking beautifully. Enjoy now and over the next fifteen plus years to come. Drink 2026-2042. — Owen Bargreen, 96 Points
"An intense, dense and concentrated red that’s packed with dark-fruit and charred-oak flavors. A flinty, ironlike, black-pepper note intermingles with deep blueberries, blackberries, graphite and espresso. Saturated and almost thick in texture, with strong, fine-grained tannins." — James Suckling, 95 Points
"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Signature Mountain Blend is composed of 61% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot. It soars from the glass with intense notes of wild blueberries, red currant jelly, and fresh black cherries, plus suggestions of spearmint, aniseed, and pencil lead, with a touch of cloves. Full-bodied, the palate is vibrant and shimmery with fine-grained tannins and a refreshing backbone, finishing long and fragrant." — The Wine Palate, 95 Points
